Raca: Let Me See Them As You See Them

Christ's Way of Holding Truth Without Contempt

Among the Aramaic words preserved in the Gospels, Raca may be one of the most confronting.

Raca.

Empty one. Worthless one. Good-for-nothing.

Jesus speaks this word during the Sermon on the Mount, immediately after recalling the commandment, "You shall not murder."

Then He takes us deeper.

From the violence of the hand to the violence that can begin within the heart.

Raca names the moment we reduce another human being to what they have done.

The one who hurt me.

The one who betrayed me.

The one who failed me.

The one who is wrong.

We may never speak the word aloud.

But the body knows Raca.

The jaw tightens.

The eyes harden.

The heart closes.

And this is precisely where Christ meets us.

Jesus does not ask us to abandon discernment, deny what happened, or call what is false true.

He asks something far more demanding:

Can you remain in Truth without entering contempt?

Can you recognise what another has done without reducing them to what they have done?

Can you carry conviction without needing an enemy?

This is the formidable way of Christ.

His fire does not depend upon grievance for its heat.

And perhaps this is one of the deepest purifications asked of anyone who wishes to carry His living power:

Let the grievance leave while the fire remains.
