Water fasting creates a rare and spacious pause, a time when the usual rhythms of consuming, digesting and reaching outward become quiet, allowing our attention to turn inward.
Across ancient spiritual traditions, fasting has served as a threshold practice: a deliberate emptying that creates space for prayer, clarity, renewal, and deeper listening.
Fasting also lies close to the heart of the Christian contemplative tradition. Jesus entered the wilderness and fasted for forty days before beginning His public ministry, and the earliest Christians continued to fast as part of prayer, discernment and preparation.
Over the Autumn Equinox, as the Earth moves through the beautiful balance of light and darkness, we enter this threshold consciously.
For these days, water becomes our central companion.
We drink slowly. We listen deeply. We simplify. We pray. We rest.
And perhaps we hear the words of Christ again:
“If anyone thirsts, let them come to me and drink.”
— John 7:37
This is therefore more than a fast from food. It is an invitation into intimacy with water, its simplicity, purity and movement through the body while contemplating the profound place of Living Water within the teachings of Jesus.
As the season turns toward autumn, we too make space to release what has been completed, gather what is essential, and return refreshed to what matters most.
We empty ourselves of excess.
We become quiet enough to listen.
We come to the waters.
And we drink.
A Note on Health & Suitability
This retreat includes a period of water-only fasting, which can place significant demands upon the body. While fasting has an ancient spiritual lineage, it is not appropriate for everyone.
Please consult your doctor or qualified healthcare professional before attending, particularly if you have an existing health condition, take regular medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of disordered eating, or have any uncertainty about whether fasting is suitable for you.
Participation is always guided by care for the body, not endurance. If at any point your body needs nourishment, modify or end the fast. Listening to the body is part of the practice.
This is not a test of willpower. It is an invitation into simplicity, prayer and deeper listening — with reverence for the body that carries us.
